For one of my classes this fall, BREE 504 Instrumentation and Control we were tasked with creating a final project that incorporated at least two sensors and coding either in Arduino or LabVIEW. Along with my team members Simone Cole, Camille Laboisse, and Linda Wu we developed a dynamic ballast system for a tractor. The inspiration for this project came from the fact that Simone, Camille, and I are all involved with the International Quarter Scale tractor competition. This system would actively change the distribution of weight on the tractor, optimizing the traction experienced by the wheels. We used four strain gauges, a tension load cell, a linear actuator and an Arduino to achieve this goal. We then displayed the output of the tension load-cell and the weight distribution ratio on LabVIEW.
